Screening Methodology

HalalScreener

AAOIFI Standard No. 21

Uses the globally recognized AAOIFI standard, the gold standard for Shariah-compliant investing. Both qualitative (business activity) and quantitative (financial ratio) screens are applied with transparent thresholds.

Zoya

AAOIFI by default

Zoya states that AAOIFI is its default standard, and paying subscribers can switch to other recognized index standards. On the free tier they show only a pass or fail status, with the actual ratio breakdowns locked behind Zoya Pro. HalalScreener shows the debt ratio and compliance grade on the free tier so you can see the reasoning, not just the verdict.

HalalScreener Advantages

  • Costs less: $9.99/mo vs Zoya's $14.99/mo, the only paid tier Zoya offers
  • Ratio details on the free tier: see the debt ratio and grade, not just a pass or fail status
  • AI-powered compliance explanations that tell you WHY a stock passes or fails
  • Crypto screening included (Zoya does not screen cryptocurrencies at all)
  • Telegram bot and Chrome extension for screening anywhere you browse
  • Full Arabic language support for MENA investors
  • 7-day free trial, cancel anytime, no charge if you cancel before it ends
  • Verdicts inside Claude and ChatGPT through the HalalScreener MCP connector (Premium); Zoya's site lists no AI-assistant connector
  • Sunni and Shia rulings side by side in the AI Scholar, which Zoya does not offer
  • Bursa Malaysia covered through the Securities Commission Malaysia's official list, a market Zoya's site does not list

Zoya Strengths

  • iPhone app as well as Android (HalalScreener is on Google Play, with no iPhone app yet)
  • In-app trading and brokerage sync via Plaid and SnapTrade, including trading from a linked Robinhood account since October 2026
  • Established brand with a larger user community and named scholars

The Verdict

HalalScreener costs less ($9.99/mo vs Zoya's $14.99/mo), shows the ratio and grade on the free tier instead of a bare pass or fail, screens crypto, and adds AI explanations, a Developer API, Telegram bot, Chrome extension, and Arabic support. Zoya's edge is its iPhone app and in-app trading; HalalScreener is on Google Play, with no iPhone app yet. If you want the most transparent screening at the lower price, HalalScreener is the better choice.
