Al-Waaqia · The Inevitable

بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. 56:1

   إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلۡوَاقِعَةُ﴿١﴾

   When the Occurrence occurs,

2. 56:2

   لَيۡسَ لِوَقۡعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ﴿٢﴾

   There is, at its occurrence, no denial.

3. 56:3

   خَافِضَةࣱ رَّافِعَةٌ﴿٣﴾

   It will bring down [some] and raise up [others].¹⁶⁰⁸

4. 56:4

   إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ رَجࣰّا﴿٤﴾

   When the earth is shaken with convulsion

5. 56:5

   وَبُسَّتِ ٱلۡجِبَالُ بَسࣰّا﴿٥﴾

   And the mountains are broken down, crumbling

6. 56:6

   فَكَانَتۡ هَبَآءࣰ مُّنۢبَثࣰّا﴿٦﴾

   And become dust dispersing,

7. 56:7

   وَكُنتُمۡ أَزۡوَٰجࣰا ثَلَٰثَةࣰ﴿٧﴾

   And you become [of] three kinds:

8. 56:8

   فَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ﴿٨﴾

   Then the companions of the right - what are the companions of the right?¹⁶⁰⁹

9. 56:9

   وَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ﴿٩﴾

   And the companions of the left - what are companions of the left?¹⁶¹⁰

10. 56:10

    وَٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ﴿١٠﴾

    And the forerunners, the forerunners¹⁶¹¹ -

11. 56:11

    أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبُونَ﴿١١﴾

    Those are the ones brought near [to Allāh]

12. 56:12

    فِي جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ﴿١٢﴾

    In the Gardens of Pleasure,

13. 56:13

    ثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ﴿١٣﴾

    A [large] company of the former peoples

14. 56:14

    وَقَلِيلࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ﴿١٤﴾

    And a few of the later peoples,

15. 56:15

    عَلَىٰ سُرُرࣲ مَّوۡضُونَةࣲ﴿١٥﴾

    On thrones woven [with ornament],

16. 56:16

    مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيۡهَا مُتَقَٰبِلِينَ﴿١٦﴾

    Reclining on them, facing each other.

17. 56:17

    يَطُوفُ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وِلۡدَٰنࣱ مُّخَلَّدُونَ﴿١٧﴾

    There will circulate among them young boys made eternal

18. 56:18

    بِأَكۡوَابࣲ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأۡسࣲ مِّن مَّعِينࣲ﴿١٨﴾

    With vessels, pitchers and a cup [of wine] from a flowing spring -

19. 56:19

    لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنۡهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ﴿١٩﴾

    No headache will they have therefrom, nor will they be intoxicated -

20. 56:20

    وَفَٰكِهَةࣲ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ﴿٢٠﴾

    And fruit of what they select

21. 56:21

    وَلَحۡمِ طَيۡرࣲ مِّمَّا يَشۡتَهُونَ﴿٢١﴾

    And the meat of fowl, from whatever they desire.

22. 56:22

    وَحُورٌ عِينࣱ﴿٢٢﴾

    And [for them are] fair women with large, [beautiful] eyes,

23. 56:23

    كَأَمۡثَٰلِ ٱللُّؤۡلُوِٕ ٱلۡمَكۡنُونِ﴿٢٣﴾

    The likenesses of pearls well-protected,

24. 56:24

    جَزَآءَۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعۡمَلُونَ﴿٢٤﴾

    As reward for what they used to do.

25. 56:25

    لَا يَسۡمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغۡوࣰا وَلَا تَأۡثِيمًا﴿٢٥﴾

    They will not hear therein ill speech or commission of sin -

26. 56:26

    إِلَّا قِيلࣰا سَلَٰمࣰا سَلَٰمࣰا﴿٢٦﴾

    Only a saying [of] peace, peace.

27. 56:27

    وَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡيَمِينِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡيَمِينِ﴿٢٧﴾

    The companions of the right - what are the companions of the right?

28. 56:28

    فِي سِدۡرࣲ مَّخۡضُودࣲ﴿٢٨﴾

    [They will be] among lote trees with thorns removed

29. 56:29

    وَطَلۡحࣲ مَّنضُودࣲ﴿٢٩﴾

    And [banana] trees layered [with fruit]

30. 56:30

    وَظِلࣲّ مَّمۡدُودࣲ﴿٣٠﴾

    And shade extended

31. 56:31

    وَمَآءࣲ مَّسۡكُوبࣲ﴿٣١﴾

    And water poured out

32. 56:32

    وَفَٰكِهَةࣲ كَثِيرَةࣲ﴿٣٢﴾

    And fruit, abundant [and varied],

33. 56:33

    لَّا مَقۡطُوعَةࣲ وَلَا مَمۡنُوعَةࣲ﴿٣٣﴾

    Neither limited [to season] nor forbidden,

34. 56:34

    وَفُرُشࣲ مَّرۡفُوعَةٍ﴿٣٤﴾

    And [upon] beds raised high.

35. 56:35

    إِنَّآ أَنشَأۡنَٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءࣰ﴿٣٥﴾

    Indeed, We have produced them [i.e., the women of Paradise] in a [new] creation

36. 56:36

    فَجَعَلۡنَٰهُنَّ أَبۡكَارًا﴿٣٦﴾

    And made them virgins,

37. 56:37

    عُرُبًا أَتۡرَابࣰا﴿٣٧﴾

    Devoted [to their husbands] and of equal age,

38. 56:38

    لِّأَصۡحَٰبِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ﴿٣٨﴾

    For the companions of the right [who are]

39. 56:39

    ثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ﴿٣٩﴾

    A company of the former peoples

40. 56:40

    وَثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ﴿٤٠﴾

    And a company of the later peoples.

41. 56:41

    وَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ﴿٤١﴾

    And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left?

42. 56:42

    فِي سَمُومࣲ وَحَمِيمࣲ﴿٤٢﴾

    [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water

43. 56:43

    وَظِلࣲّ مِّن يَحۡمُومࣲ﴿٤٣﴾

    And a shade of black smoke,

44. 56:44

    لَّا بَارِدࣲ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ﴿٤٤﴾

    Neither cool nor beneficial.

45. 56:45

    إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ قَبۡلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتۡرَفِينَ﴿٤٥﴾

    Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence,

46. 56:46

    وَكَانُوا۟ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلۡحِنثِ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ﴿٤٦﴾

    And they used to persist in the great violation,¹⁶¹²

47. 56:47

    وَكَانُوا۟ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابࣰا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوثُونَ﴿٤٧﴾

    And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?

48. 56:48

    أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ﴿٤٨﴾

    And our forefathers [as well]?"

49. 56:49

    قُلۡ إِنَّ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ﴿٤٩﴾

    Say, [O Muḥammad], "Indeed, the former and later peoples

50. 56:50

    لَمَجۡمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَٰتِ يَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ﴿٥٠﴾

    Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day."

51. 56:51

    ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمۡ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبُونَ﴿٥١﴾

    Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers,

52. 56:52

    لَأٓكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرࣲ مِّن زَقُّومࣲ﴿٥٢﴾

    Will be eating from trees of zaqqūm

53. 56:53

    فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنۡهَا ٱلۡبُطُونَ﴿٥٣﴾

    And filling with it your bellies

54. 56:54

    فَشَٰرِبُونَ عَلَيۡهِ مِنَ ٱلۡحَمِيمِ﴿٥٤﴾

    And drinking on top of it from scalding water

55. 56:55

    فَشَٰرِبُونَ شُرۡبَ ٱلۡهِيمِ﴿٥٥﴾

    And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels.

56. 56:56

    هَٰذَا نُزُلُهُمۡ يَوۡمَ ٱلدِّينِ﴿٥٦﴾

    That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense.

57. 56:57

    نَحۡنُ خَلَقۡنَٰكُمۡ فَلَوۡلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ﴿٥٧﴾

    We have created you, so why do you not believe?

58. 56:58

    أَفَرَءَيۡتُم مَّا تُمۡنُونَ﴿٥٨﴾

    Have you seen that which you emit?¹⁶¹³

59. 56:59

    ءَأَنتُمۡ تَخۡلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡخَٰلِقُونَ﴿٥٩﴾

    Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator?

60. 56:60

    نَحۡنُ قَدَّرۡنَا بَيۡنَكُمُ ٱلۡمَوۡتَ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَسۡبُوقِينَ﴿٦٠﴾

    We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone

61. 56:61

    عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمۡثَٰلَكُمۡ وَنُنشِئَكُمۡ فِي مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ﴿٦١﴾

    In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know.¹⁶¹⁴

62. 56:62

    وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمۡتُمُ ٱلنَّشۡأَةَ ٱلۡأُولَىٰ فَلَوۡلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ﴿٦٢﴾

    And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember?

63. 56:63

    أَفَرَءَيۡتُم مَّا تَحۡرُثُونَ﴿٦٣﴾

    And have you seen that [seed] which you sow?

64. 56:64

    ءَأَنتُمۡ تَزۡرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ﴿٦٤﴾

    Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower?

65. 56:65

    لَوۡ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلۡنَٰهُ حُطَٰمࣰا فَظَلۡتُمۡ تَفَكَّهُونَ﴿٦٥﴾

    If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder,¹⁶¹⁵

66. 56:66

    إِنَّا لَمُغۡرَمُونَ﴿٦٦﴾

    [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt;

67. 56:67

    بَلۡ نَحۡنُ مَحۡرُومُونَ﴿٦٧﴾

    Rather, we have been deprived."

68. 56:68

    أَفَرَءَيۡتُمُ ٱلۡمَآءَ ٱلَّذِي تَشۡرَبُونَ﴿٦٨﴾

    And have you seen the water that you drink?

69. 56:69

    ءَأَنتُمۡ أَنزَلۡتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُزۡنِ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُنزِلُونَ﴿٦٩﴾

    Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down?

70. 56:70

    لَوۡ نَشَآءُ جَعَلۡنَٰهُ أُجَاجࣰا فَلَوۡلَا تَشۡكُرُونَ﴿٧٠﴾

    If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful?

71. 56:71

    أَفَرَءَيۡتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِي تُورُونَ﴿٧١﴾

    And have you seen the fire that you ignite?

72. 56:72

    ءَأَنتُمۡ أَنشَأۡتُمۡ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُنشِـُٔونَ﴿٧٢﴾

    Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer?

73. 56:73

    نَحۡنُ جَعَلۡنَٰهَا تَذۡكِرَةࣰ وَمَتَٰعࣰا لِّلۡمُقۡوِينَ﴿٧٣﴾

    We have made it a reminder¹⁶¹⁶ and provision for the travelers,¹⁶¹⁷

74. 56:74

    فَسَبِّحۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ﴿٧٤﴾

    So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.

75. 56:75

    ۞ فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ﴿٧٥﴾

    Then I swear by the setting of the stars,¹⁶¹⁸

76. 56:76

    وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمࣱ لَّوۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ﴿٧٦﴾

    And indeed, it is an oath - if you could know - [most] great.

77. 56:77

    إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرۡءَانࣱ كَرِيمࣱ﴿٧٧﴾

    Indeed, it is a noble Qur’ān.

78. 56:78

    فِي كِتَٰبࣲ مَّكۡنُونࣲ﴿٧٨﴾

    In a Register well-protected;¹⁶¹⁹.

79. 56:79

    لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُطَهَّرُونَ﴿٧٩﴾

    None touch it except the purified [i.e., the angels].

80. 56:80

    تَنزِيلࣱ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ﴿٨٠﴾

    [It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.

81. 56:81

    أَفَبِهَٰذَا ٱلۡحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدۡهِنُونَ﴿٨١﴾

    Then is it to this statement that you are indifferent

82. 56:82

    وَتَجۡعَلُونَ رِزۡقَكُمۡ أَنَّكُمۡ تُكَذِّبُونَ﴿٨٢﴾

    And make [the thanks for] your provision that you deny [the Provider]?

83. 56:83

    فَلَوۡلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلۡحُلۡقُومَ﴿٨٣﴾

    Then why, when it [i.e., the soul at death] reaches the throat

84. 56:84

    وَأَنتُمۡ حِينَئِذࣲ تَنظُرُونَ﴿٨٤﴾

    And you are at that time looking on -

85. 56:85

    وَنَحۡنُ أَقۡرَبُ إِلَيۡهِ مِنكُمۡ وَلَٰكِن لَّا تُبۡصِرُونَ﴿٨٥﴾

    And We [i.e., Our angels] are nearer to him than you, but you do not see -

86. 56:86

    فَلَوۡلَآ إِن كُنتُمۡ غَيۡرَ مَدِينِينَ﴿٨٦﴾

    Then why do you not, if you are not to be recompensed,

87. 56:87

    تَرۡجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَٰدِقِينَ﴿٨٧﴾

    Bring it back,¹⁶²⁰ if you should be truthful?

88. 56:88

    فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِينَ﴿٨٨﴾

    And if he [i.e., the deceased] was of those brought near [to Allāh],

89. 56:89

    فَرَوۡحࣱ وَرَيۡحَانࣱ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمࣲ﴿٨٩﴾

    Then [for him is] rest and bounty and a garden of pleasure.

90. 56:90

    وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنۡ أَصۡحَٰبِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ﴿٩٠﴾

    And if he was of the companions of the right,

91. 56:91

    فَسَلَٰمࣱ لَّكَ مِنۡ أَصۡحَٰبِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ﴿٩١﴾

    Then [the angels will say], "Peace for you; [you are] from the companions of the right."

92. 56:92

    وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ﴿٩٢﴾

    But if he was of the deniers [who were] astray,

93. 56:93

    فَنُزُلࣱ مِّنۡ حَمِيمࣲ﴿٩٣﴾

    Then [for him is] accommodation of scalding water

94. 56:94

    وَتَصۡلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ﴿٩٤﴾

    And burning in Hellfire.

95. 56:95

    إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلۡيَقِينِ﴿٩٥﴾

    Indeed, this is the true certainty,

96. 56:96

    فَسَبِّحۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ﴿٩٦﴾

    So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
