How this category is screened

Payment and remittance coins, exchange tokens and decentralized spot-exchange tokens. The screen judges what the token itself does: settling transfers, or giving fee discounts and access on a trading venue. Spot trading is permissible and these tokens carry no interest-bearing or betting function, so they generally screen Halal. Scholars who look through to an exchange's margin and futures products take a stricter view of exchange tokens than this screen does.

A verdict covers buying the coin spot and holding it. Margin, leverage, futures and fixed-yield lending accounts fail whatever the coin.

Coins are screened on published scholarly opinion about what they do, because AAOIFI has not issued a cryptocurrency standard. Scholars who prohibit all cryptocurrency, or who withhold a ruling on it, would not accept any coin on this list. This is a screen, not a fatwa.
