How this category is screened
Dollar and other stablecoins. The token is a payment instrument, but fiat-backed issuers hold reserves in Treasury bills and bank deposits that earn interest for the issuer, and algorithmic or collateralized stablecoins hold their peg through lending and stability fees. Scholars differ on whether the holder shares in that riba, so this group screens Doubtful: usable for settlement, with caution.
A verdict covers buying the coin spot and holding it. Margin, leverage, futures and fixed-yield lending accounts fail whatever the coin.
Coins are screened on published scholarly opinion about what they do, because AAOIFI has not issued a cryptocurrency standard. Scholars who prohibit all cryptocurrency, or who withhold a ruling on it, would not accept any coin on this list. This is a screen, not a fatwa.
