How this category is screened
Tokens that stand for something else: a stock, fund, commodity, bond, Treasury bill or a coin held by a bridge. The token is judged by what it holds. Tokenized debt and Treasuries pay interest, so they screen Not Halal. Tokenized stocks, custodial gold and wrapped coins screen Doubtful: the status should follow the underlying asset, and custody and redemption add uncertainty. Check the underlying asset itself.
A verdict covers buying the coin spot and holding it. Margin, leverage, futures and fixed-yield lending accounts fail whatever the coin.
Coins are screened on published scholarly opinion about what they do, because AAOIFI has not issued a cryptocurrency standard. Scholars who prohibit all cryptocurrency, or who withhold a ruling on it, would not accept any coin on this list. This is a screen, not a fatwa.
